Wilderness Education in a Changing World: February 12, 2021

Hosted by   WEA basic logo   and  2nd Nature TREC logo    ONLINE and in Black Mountain, NC.

How has wilderness education changed from its historic roots? What will it look like in the future?

This year’s conference theme focuses on examining the changing landscape of wilderness education in the context of the WEA 6+1 Educational Components. Wilderness education and outdoor leadership course delivery practices must keep pace with a changing society including an increased use of virtual learning and technology, increased focus on environmental integration and place-based education, programming in suburban settings, and supporting transformational experiences in shortened course durations, all with more intentional focus on diversity and inclusion.

For 2021 we will be offering the opportunity to present virtually (from an off-site location) or in person (at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly)--with the face-to-face presentations being live streamed.  If we must cancel the face-to-face component of the mini-conference, all accepted presentations will automatically be moved to a virtual presentation.  Presenters can choose between a 30 or 60 time.  We will be assigning specific times for your presentation during the one day, mini-conference. SAVE THE DATE! FEBRUARY, 12th, 2021.

Join us at the 2021 ICOL as we collectively give intellectual energy to these topics and explore ways to support and shape wilderness education in a changing world.

UPDATE: Join us virtually for a one-day Hybrid Mini Conference

  • We are moving to a hybrid design! All events will be available ONLINE, where all participants will be able to attend virtually. Each session will include LIVE interaction with the presenter(s). We will also continue to plan to provide some IN-PERSON opportunities as long as gathering is safe in NC

  • With the adjustment to a a single-day event, presentation blocks will be shortened to facilitate the virtual experience. We're looking for new presentation proposals for shortened blocks - Due NOVEMBER 6th. Read MORE >>

  • Many of our traditional components like student blocks or research blocks will be forgone and those presentations will be worked into the general schedule.

  • The Planning Team is devising creative ways to encourage community and involvement as well as ways to maintain favorite traditions like the annual auction. We'd like to hear your ideas >>

  • Partners are offering workshops and training sessions around the time of that week and weekend instead of pre-conference sessions. Our partners who planned to offer pre-conference workshops and clinics are now offering independent workshops on the weekend after our mini conference event.

  • Additionally, the WEA is working to create an IN-PERSON ACTIVITY the day before the mini-conference for those who determine to travel to the NC location. This event is contingent entirely upon 1) the regulations on the dates of the event and 2) the safety of those involved.
